Green Career Hunt

Many of you are on the hunt for a ‘green career’, something you can sink your whole self into and know that you are helping the earth reach future sustainability. There are so many wonderful opportunities out there now and so many companies that have taken on ‘green value’ initiatives.

Take a look at NatureWorks LLC as an example. On their website they post their values and views as: “NatureWorks LLC is a leader in the bio-plastics industry. We understand that we are looked upon to pioneer our production, manufacturing and disposal practices in more sustainable ways that support our vision for a better world and for future generations. For more information on the views and values of NatureWorks LLC, see our information on Life Cycle Assessment, Green Manufacturing and Product Stewardship.”

As I cruised around the site a bit more I discovered what they are up to: “Imagine a polymer used to make everything from packaging and consumer goods to fibers for apparel and furnishings, derived from renewable resources instead of oil. Polymer that offers more disposal options and is more environmentally friendly to manufacture than traditional petroleum based plastics. Derived from 100% annually renewable resources such as corn, our product, NatureWorks® polymer, is the world’s first polymer showing a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.”

I like the idea that their product is derived from 100% renewable resources and it’s disposal is more environmentally friendly. If it helps to take the gulp out of the oil we are using to produce plastic bags (1.6 billion gallons of oil annually) this is a step in the right direction. This company positions itself globally and has opportunities in Marketing and Sales, Chemistry, Biology, Manufacturing and more.

If you’re on the ‘green hunt’ this might be a company you want to check into. With the green marketplace pushing $250 million annually – green careers are becoming easier to hunt.

MoneyBags… Going Green?

Sometimes it just takes reading one line to implement a profound change in the way you do things. I was reading an article about plastic-bags in the October 2007 issue of Fast Company titled, Moneybags (page 64). In the first paragraph it states “Bags are made from oil, and our bag habit costs us 1.6 billion gallons each year.”

I was overtaken by the 1.6 billion gallons of oil it takes each ‘year’ – every 365 days we are alive – to provide us with plastic bags. I am thrilled that there are people out there that are awakening us to these facts and stimulating change.

Living green, as a way of life, is gaining huge popularity. More and more of you are interested in aligning your career interests, skills and values with a company where you can make the most impact on the world. I applaud you! And there really are some cool jobs out there and employers who are working towards a better environment too. Here are just a few that are listed on Environmentalcareer.com, whose focus it to help match those who want a career helping the environment, with employers who focus on the same.

If you’re FiredUP about going green in your career you may want to check out this site and some of the employers listed to find out if they align with your ‘green values’ list.
